An Edo period kotsuzumi (small drum) with an old body. A gem with exquisite workmanship and a rare rich sound.
Outline
Old kotsuzumi drum. It is thought to have been made in the early Edo period. Maki-e was also done in the same period. It is thought to be made in the same period as the body (original). The inside of the body has a unique feature of a stepped kanna and an uneri-like horizontal stripe kanna. The artist is unknown, but the workmanship is superb. The weight is 403 grams. The leather mouth is also thin. It comes in a box with gorgeous gold maki-e.
Condition
There is no noticeable damage to the body and maki-e, and both are in good condition.
Characteristics
The weight of the body is a little light, but the tone is rich and the lingering sound is lustrous. The leather mouth is thin, which is rare for early Edo period copper, and the bottom of the nipple pouch also has a unique tension. The bottom of the breast pouch also has a unique tension. The rich and varied tones that bounce around like squirrels on copper are unique.
