Old Noh pipe "Kuroshishi" made in the Edo period (1603-1868).

Old Noh pipe. Made of sooty bamboo and wrapped with cherry birch. Black lion head metal. With maki-e lacquer flute tube (silver ring is missing). It is thought to have been made around the middle of the Edo period.
[Condition.]
Since this is an old flute, repairs have been repeatedly made to the cracks and peeling off of the windings, but there are no problems with playing it as it is now. The beeswax inside the mouth has also been adjusted.
The position, angle, and shape of the beeswax inside the mouth of the Noh flute can be fine-tuned to greatly affect the way the player's breath enters the flute, the attack of the sound, and the tone quality of the sound. Our Noh pipes are made with a general amount and shape of wax at the discretion of the flute maker. Please note that fine adjustment may be necessary depending on the player.

This ancient pipe is thought to date back to the mid-Edo period. The cicada, the singing mouth, and the overall form are very similar to those of Hogyo, but we cannot be certain. It is a flute with good tone quality.
