Here's a 1949 Gibson Super 400-C (cutaway) in Sunburst finish. The guitar comes to us from the son of the original owner (who has passed). The original owner was known as Wild Bill Hendrix (real name William Norman Hendrix). He was a lead guitarist on two tv shows in the 1950s, one called Hoffman Hayride, and the other The Biggie Jamboree. As you can see, there are some pictures of Bill playing the guitar! He also played with well know steel player Bobby Black. Sometime in the early 70s, the guitar suffered a slight fracture on the back of the headstock, so Bill decided to send it back to Gibson to get repaired, and to then refinish the guitar. He also had Gibson relabel it with the proper model and serial number on the inside of the guitar. The fracture repair is nearly invisible. It's as solid as it was when it left the factory! And with the refin, it looks mint. The B-string tuner tip (just the tip) has been replaced, and there's an added output jack for the floating pickup, while everything else is original.
The guitar features a split-diamond, mother-of-pearl headstock inlay, a “modern” Gibson logo (which replaced the original “script” logo in 1948), 7-ply headstock binding, split-block inlays on an ebony fretboard, 5-ply fretboard binding (which replacing the original 3-ply binding in 1949), a solid 2-piece spruce top with 7-ply binding, a solid 2-piece maple back with 3-ply binding, solid maple sides, and of course the engraved Super 400 tailpiece. Playability is exceptional, with a wonderful neck angle, consistent low action down the neck, and plenty of room in the bridge for future adjustments. Truss rod functions properly. Acoustically the guitar is loud, with amazing protection and clarity. It's very full sounding as well. The floating neck pickup is a real treat for anybody playing jazz, blues, or country. There's an output jack to plug in with, and a single volume control connected to the pickguard. The pickup sounds incredible! Not sure of its year, but as you can see in the old black and white pic's, 'ol Wild Bill was playing it plugged in! This is a really cool opportunity to get into a real Super 400 for a lot less! HSC and pic's included!
