Gibson Les Paul Standard Pre-Historic Reissue 1988 - Heritage Dark Sunburst
Here we have a very nice 1988 Gibson Les Paul "Pre-Historic" Reissue. This one features a quilted maple top and is in excellent condition.
Other specs include a mahogany body, mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard. It has Gibson Deluxe tuners, trapezoid inlays and a stop tailpiece. The bridge is an ABR-1 and the guitar has an ink stamp serial number. The pickups are Bill Lawrence designed HB-R and HB-L "The Original" circuit board humbuckers. This one never had a pickguard and there are no mounting holes.
The guitar is in excellent shape for its age. There are a few pinpoint dings on the top, and some small marks and nicks around the body edge and neck. There are some light surface scratches, a few minor impressions in the wood, and other signs of play when inspected closely. There are no large dents and no breaks. The hardware shows light oxidation and the pickup rings have warped slightly. The frets are in good shape. Some of the fret ends have made tiny cracks in the neck binding from humidity fluctuation. The parts and electronics all appear to be original, though the retaining wire for the ABR-1 is missing.
The guitar weighs 9lbs 1oz. The neck measures .810 to .980 at the 1st and 12th. It has more of a 60s carve, rounded at the apex and not too thin. It fattens subtly higher up the register. The guitar has lots of sustain and good sound movement through the body, though not a loud acoustic tone. It's slinky and easy to play under the picking hand. The neck is easy to navigate and the guitar bends easily. We're used to seeing these with straight flame maple tops, so it's nice to come across a monster quilt top! The color is like a dark honeyburst in person and the instrument looks fantastic.
