Like it's stablemate, the ES-335, the ES-330 from 1959 is not an easy guitar to find. Plenty of 60's but the first year 330 is a bit of a unicorn. They are out there but folks tend to hold onto them and why would that be? Because they are amazing guitars. What makes a 59 so special (and why am I asking you these questions?)? The neck. Big fat and round measuring .89" at the first fret and just about 1" at the 12th. The 330 was largely underappreciated for decades and noses were turned up at this "student" guitar. Student guitar or not (it's an arguable point), these are wonderful guitars. Sit on the couch and play it unplugged when your wife tells you (not always nicely) to turn it down and it's plenty loud being full hollow. Crank it up (when she's out picking up the kids from soccer practice) and it sings, it screams and it howls. Literally, these guitars are the kings of controllable feedback. P90's have no manners. They are nasty and snarly and ready to rock. They've gotten a lot more expensive lately as folks start to wake up and realize how great they are. Want to save some money? Buy a 60 or later. You'll get that great tone but you won't get that great neck. The later ones have a slimmer neck profile until you get to 64. You could buy a 64 but you don't get the dot markers (gone in 62) nor do you get the more attractive black pickup covers (also gone in 62). The guitar is 100% original-only the strings have been changed. The case is a brown Stone that has had some original artwork added (and then partially painted over. Looks like it will clean up relatively easily but I'll let the next guy do that.
