*COLBY ELPICO Combo Amp, 2025 NEW, a tone-machine which can produce a wide range of clean and overdrive sounds. The Colby ELPICO started out as a recreation of an obscure portable tube PA and combo built in the late 1950s. The PA may have been the first “lunchbox” amp and was offered under the ELPICO brand as the AC88 and also private labeled as the Sound City Studio 20. Guitarists deeply into vintage amps have been aware of these for years. The combo however, has some vintage cred for two reasons. A young Paul McCartney had one and there is a picture of the early Beatles with one at Paul’s side. But more significantly, the ELPICO AC55 was used on the first Kink’s album for songs like ‘You Really Got Me” and may be the first recording of a distorted guitar sound on a British hit record. That unique, raunchy tone was purportedly created using an AC55 with a ripped speaker, and for some of the recording it was plugged into a bigger amp. So what about the Colby ELPICO? It started out as a recreation of the AC55 circuit but then became something much more versatile and a tool for creating a wide variety of great guitar tones. As the original vintage amp was originally designed as a PA for use with microphones and gramophones (phonographs in the US), the ELPICO circuit is different to typical guitar amps, especially guitar amps built in the late 1950s and 1960s. These differences, and the unique tone are what attracted me to develop it as a new Colby amp model. It uses a pair of EL84s in Ultralinear mode for 16 watts of clean power. It’s got three 12AX7s and a bit more gain that other amps of the era. It has three inputs, three volume controls (two for microphones and one for the Gramophone input which has been eliminated on the new version) plus Baxandall style treble and bass controls. It also has an EZ81 tube rectifier which was typical for a British amp of this power, the ELPICO is completely hand wired by Mitch Colby in New York. It uses high quality parts and is built on a strong, welded aluminum chassis for strength and is lightweight. The result is an amp that offers great clean, crunch and overdrive So what’s new? The following: * Two channels are voiced differently (vintage and modern) * Mid range control for added tonal flexibility * two EL84s for 16 watts * 3-way Bright switches on each channel * Switch to cascade the channels for additional gain * Master Volume control to tame the beast (bypassable) * Line out (with level control and tone compensation switch) Black Tolex........$3350
